We finished our big road adventures with one of the best, by offering a once-only adventure in September 2019. Named “The Warm Heart of Africa” because this is what Africans call Malawi, and Malawi was the central point, “heart”, of this journey.
Getting everyone through Zambian roadworks with deep sand, was an achievement!.
A total of around 4500 kms, we started and finished our adventure at the epic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and biked through the four lesser known countries that surround Lake Kariba – Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia.
On sealed roads with an occasional short lodge access being unpaved, the group was a total of around 20 – a mixture of riders and pillion/4×4 passengers as well as a self drive 4×4 ; John was motorcycle guide/tour boss and myself and our dedicated paramedic Dan drove the 2 support vehicles during this adventure.
As is the norm on all MOTOAVENTURES tours we ran it fairly freely with every bike having a GPS with the days route installed to follow as a purple line, and regular meet up points were decided by John for refueling, coffee/snacks and regrouping. This way the tour split into smaller groups which is always a much more pleasant way to experience these places and John travelled up and down the groups. We had satellite communication between him and the two support vehicles which travelled the same route and saw and experienced everything the bikers did.
As anticipated the border crossings were very much TIA (This is Africa) sometimes as much as 5 hours, but everyone had been warned and great patience and humour was shown.
The scenery, biking and accommodation proved as good, or better, than described and the animal viewings were exceptional. Apart from the normal list we were very lucky in getting really close up to a pack of well-fed, sleeping painted dogs (rarely seen and normally only the occasional one); a leopard just above our open topped 4×4 eating her latest kill; we tracked and then sat upwind of a family of rhinos lazing in the long grass; watched fisheagles diving to catch fish off the stern of our private cruise on Lake Malawi; and a small family of elephants strolling across the Luangwa River in the late afternoon. These are just a few of the memories everyone went home with.
A wonderful adventure to finish our 13 years of operating around South Africa.
