bmw bike tours

Founded by John Griffiths and Su Downham, Moto Aventures originated from John’s idea during his two winter journeys exploring Africa from London to Cape Town.

Established in Andorra in 1996, MOTOAVENTURES initially arranged high-quality guided off-road excursions in the Pyrenees, Portugal, Greece, the Mediterranean, and thrilling off-road escapades in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains & Sahara Desert, all on enduro bikes – KTM450s.

Since 2007, we have been leading fantastic touring expeditions on BMW GS1200 in Southern Africa, taking numerous riders and their companions from Cape Town to Victoria Falls and back, through Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and on our last major journey in September 2019 from Zimbabwe, through Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia.

We now offer a 10-day journey from Cape Town to Johannesburg through Lesotho, on Triumph Rally Pro bikes.

In 2021, we added adventure biking tours, on road and easy gravel tracks, starting from Marrakech on our BMW GS adventure bikes. These have been very well-received as they offer a fantastic blend of culture and adventure.

In early 2024, MotoAventures partnered with Sahara Experience, who has expanded our fleet with CanAm buggies, allowing non-biker friends to join our off-road tours.

Our main office is now located in Ouarzazate, where we have our garage and tour base, serving as the starting point for our tours. This is where our fleets of KTM450 EXCs and CanAm buggies are stored.

With almost 30 years of exploration across this stunning kingdom, both on and off-road, we have discovered routes that remain unexplored and off the beaten path. We invite you to come and join us.

John griffiths - alias “Johnny maroc”

I was born in Tanzania and worked for 16 years prior to MotoAventures in the oil-related diving business. I have hyperbaric medical training and experience from my years working offshore, as well as the Wilderness Medical Certificate, and safety (a highly important issue in biking – one which is often not given sufficient attention) is something I pay particular attention to.

Being responsible for route finding and checking for our various different adventures, and plotting the routes for the GPSs that we have installed on all our bikes on our tours, I get to wander around discovering hidden, lesser known parts of this beautiful country. I am the “gaffer” on all our off-road tours, either riding within the group, or providing 4×4 support accompanied by our mechanic.

I have a reasonable smattering of various languages. Early 90s I rode solo from London to Cape Town over two years and apparently, I’m a very experienced off-road rider  😉

Su Downham

For over 30 years I’ve called Andorra home. I speak English, Spanish, Catalan and French fluently and have considerable experience in tourism and PR, and even ran my own estate agency and building company here.

More than 25 years ago, John and I launched MotoAventures, turning our passion into an incredible journey.
With the company reorganisation, since the beginning of 2024 I have taken over the organising of our Adventure bike tours, both in Morocco and South Africa.

I accompany these thrilling adventures in the support truck, ensuring everything runs smoothly, as well as managing all logistics for your customized tour requests.
I have my Wilderness Medical Certificate.

Maryam Bousenane
